The origins of the University of Dundee go back to 1881, when University College, Dundee was founded. The College then had a 70-year relationship with the University of St Andrews before it became an independent university in 1967. It is firmly established as a traditional university, grounded in excellence in teaching and research. The past five years have seen rapid growth at the University, with total student numbers doubling to around 18,000, supported by over 3,000 staff. The international contingent now makes up almost 16 per cent of the total and comes from over 80 different countries. Dundee has the nicest climate of all of Scotland¡¯s cities, with more sunshine and lower rainfall; its location on the coast means that it avoids the most extreme winter temperatures.
