Tacoma Community College traces its roots to 1962, when residents of the Tacoma-Pierce County area elected to fund and build a local community college. The Tacoma School District No. 10 Board of Directors applied for authorization to build the College in 1961 and received approval in 1963 from the Washington State Board of Education. The College opened in the fall of 1965 and was dedicated February 16, 1968.
