Chartered in 1801 as South Carolina College, the University still remains on its original site in Columbia, the state capital. The University's main campus is located in downtown Columbia, a Sun Belt city with a population of nearly 550,000. Columbia is in the center of the state, a 3hour drive from the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains or Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand.
